Fane, Mildmay, 2nd Earl Of Westmorland

   The eldest son of Francis Fane, the first earl (his mother was Lady Mary Mildmay, daughter of Queen Elizabeth's treasurer), he was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge (founded by his grandfather, Sir Walter Mildmay). Between 1620 and 1628 he was in Parliament three times. Created a knight of the Bath at the coronation of Charles I, he sided with the king on the outbreak of the Civil War. He was arrested by Parliament, imprisoned for several months in the Tower of London, and released only after paying a large fine. And at the Restoration his property was returned to him and he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Northamptonshire. In addition to his first collection, Side Effects (1978), reflects her experiences working as a school counselor and a hospital clerk. Some of her recent poetry publications: Consequences, 2000.
